FIGHT AND LOVE WITHOUT FEAR

“As descendants of fairies, fliers were an old, forgotten species who appear human but could fly without wings.  They lived peacefully amongst humans for several decades until a secret government agency developed new technology that allowed experimentation on fliers and discovered how to make ordinary people fly.

Not sitting back and accepting the news, Sydona Wilder and her fairy Raoul, set out to find the agency and put a stop to the capture of the rare species.  But Sydona will have to fight her own battles of facing her dark past and learning how to trust people again.”

Self-published books often get a bad reputation, but let me tell you, I was pretty impressed with this one.  Laura Mae did a fantastic job weaving fairies and fliers into what would otherwise seem like our own world.

It was easy to believe that Sydona, the main character, would react the way she did in those situations.  However, I actually had trouble picturing Sydona in her sixties. It was much easier to picture her in her 30s.  Now that I think about it though, maybe she was supposed to look like she was in her 30s since she was a flier, and they tend to live longer than humans.

I would have also liked to read a little more about Sydona’s past [after her parents were abducted.  The scene where the little boy drowned seemed very out of the blue, and I would have liked to see more of how she dealt with those emotions as a ten-year-old and how it shaped who she was in the present day.]  Despite this, Sydona and the other characters were well developed and the author did a good job in getting you to feel for them in the 217 pages of the book. I cringed when something happened, I got angry for them, I cheered for them.  The characters spoke to me, and I was definitely invested in them.

These are some of my favorite kinds of stories, the ones that blend fantasy with realistic fiction and speak to certain things or events going on in our own society.  I’m not sure if it was the author’s intention, but the way the humans in this book reacted to fliers is very similar to how people in our own society react to things they don’t understand.  The first instinct is to be afraid and then, maybe, to study, but we have to be careful, or the conditions in which the studies take place can quickly turn inhumane.

The story ended with quite a few loose ends, leaving a good excuse for a sequel.  I will absolutely be reading the sequel…if there ever is one… Please let there be one.  I really enjoyed this book, the characters, the concept, the fight between good and bad. I want to know what happens between Sydona and Silas.  Will Dr. Malik come back? What about Giovonna and Raoul, and Willow?

Giving self-published books a good name

Aside from a few typos and formatting issues, Fliers looks like it was professionally published.  To be honest, I can’t even fault it too much for the typos and formatting issues, because I also find those mistakes in traditionally published books by really famous authors.

This is Laura Mae’s debut novel, and I can see her only getting better as a writer.  You can buy your own copy of Fliers on Amazon, here. I enjoyed this book so much, that we even put it in our subscription/gift box for Summer 2018!  I look forward to reading Laura’s next book.
