10 of the Best Books to give the Graduate

This year is a weird one for the graduates. Many have missed out on all of the end-of-the-year events: prom, grad night, senior banquets, walking the stage. But that just means that we have to get creative on how we celebrate our graduates. This list of the ten best books to give to the graduate are full of great life tips and inspiration.

In my family, I am the aunt/sister who always gives a book for every occasion: birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations. As one of the biggest readers in my family, I feel it not only my pleasure to shower my nieces and nephews with books, but also my duty.

Books can make some of the best presents, especially for graduation. When you are about to cross that stage, the path ahead does not always seem clear and books can often help you find your way.

Here are ten of my favorite books to give as graduation gifts:

1. Oh, the Places You’ll Go, Dr. Seuss

It may seem a little childish, but it has a great message. Plus, what adult can’t stand to be reminded of what it is like to be a kid?

2. Make Your Bed, by William H. McRaven

Short and to the point, this book is full of powerful life lessons that explain how anyone can change themselves – and the world – for the better, starting with making your bed.

3. In Conclusion, Don’t Worry About It, by Lauren Graham

And Lauren Graham, star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, is at it again in this expansion of the commencement speech she gave in 2017. With her witty sense of humor and relatability, she reminds you to find joy in all that you do.

5. Do It Scared, by Ruth Soukup

Action is the antidote to fear, and this book is full of practical strategies and real encouragement to face your fears, overcome obstacles, and create a life you love.

6. Very Good Lives, by JK Rowling

Another commencement speech turned book, but this time by an author many of us grew up reading, focusing on how we can embrace failure and use our imagination to better ourselves.

7. You Learn by Living, by Eleanor Roosevelt

One of the longer books on this list, one of the most influential women of the 20th century talks about overcoming fears, facing challenges, and taking one step at a time.

8. Real Artists Don’t Starve, by Jeff Goins

From an early age, we are constantly told that we will one day have to grow up and find a real job, that we won’t be able to make a career as a writer or an artist. In this book, Jeff Goins combats that idea and talks about how it is entirely possible to make a living from your art.

9. Whatever You Are, Be a Good One, by Lisa Congdon

Full of inspirational quotes and beautiful artwork, this book is a great reminder to follow your dreams and create a life you love.

10. Girl, Stop Apologizing, by Rachel Hollis

Rachel Hollis identifies the excuses, behaviors, and the skills needed to get past society’s expectations and follow your dreams.
